What is a British Shorthair Cat?

The British shorthair is the most popular pedigree breed of cat in the UK. It is thought that the ancestors of the BSH were brought to England by the Romans to catch mice. The 'new' British shorthair breed was featured at the first ever official cat show in Crystal Palace in 1871.
A quarter of all kittens registered with the GCCF (UK registry) each year are BSH, whilst here in the US the breed remains pretty hard to come by.
They are a very calm and loving breed making them a popular family member.

Meet Paula & Mark


Hi and welcome to our website! I'm Paula and my husband is Mark :-) We are originally from the UK, but now reside in Virginia, USA on our 20 acre horse-farm. My passion for cats started when I was just 10 years old and was given my first pet cat; a Russian Blue-cross female which I named Sophie. Since then, I've never been without a feline-friend.


Alongside my passion for cats I also have a passion for horses. I have ridden horses for 30 years and owned them for 20 years. In 2023 I decided it was time to hang up my stirrups and I redirected my focus to creating and (with the help of my husband) building my cattery. My vision and focus is to breed the best British Shorthair cats which exhibit outstanding traits of the breed and who will become the most amazing family pets and companions, whilst being of show-quality. The health of our cats and kittens is always at the forefront of everything we do here at BoB !
